She ran like her ass was on fire, and Darren felt like howling with delight. This wasn’t fear, or aggravation. Cass was making him work for her.
She might have been considerably smaller than Darren, but damned if Cass couldn’t run like the wind.
Digging in to the mossy earth with his paws, Darren picked up speed. And damn, not only was she fast, but Cass was wily. Her ability to maneuver around trees was impressive. He’d just about caught up with her, was close enough to bite at her back leg, when a limb smacked him in the face.
She made a sound that he would’ve sworn was a laugh. He spit out a leaf and dodged another limb.
My clever girl wants to play.
Exhilaration flowed through his entire body and Darren realized he was happy. God, it had been so long since he’d felt pure joy, that the sensation was strange. There, in the middle of Irish woods, dodging tree limbs and–literally–chasing his mate, Darren felt light. Free. Hell, he felt like singing.
Better catch Cass quick and shake that shit off. My singing voice sounds like someone strangling a cat.
One quick leap later and she was within biting distance. And, if Darren wasn’t mistaken, Cass wasn’t going as fast. He nipped at her leg, and she definitely slowed. Looking over her shoulder, she snarled. Darren bit at her again and Cass stopped altogether. Showing teeth, she snapped back. Ordinarily, he would’ve treaded cautiously seeing this kind of a reaction, but her pheromones coated the air.
She’s enjoying this.
Darren circled her, Cass turning so she could watch his every move. Instinctually, a Lycan would take the opportunity to display his Alpha status. To show his mate that he would be the bigger wolf, the protector, to stop at nothing to keep her safe. Which meant beginning with her. More often than not, a Lycan male would bite his mate’s neck, in wolf form, when they were engaged in this tradition. Not that Darren had prior experience, the knowledge was just one of the many things he simply knew.
But, Lycan males generally didn’t fuck up to the extent that Darren had. Lycan males did not turn down their mates. Yet, he had, for months. It was time to show Cass how he had changed. How she could literally send a King to his knees.
Standing before her, he lowered himself to a crouch, and bared his neck. If anyone needed to submit to their mate, it was Darren. This was the first thing he could do to make up for the pain he’d put her through. Please let her accept me.
He kept his face pointed to the ground, and his heart skipped a beat when her paws entered his vision. He didn’t look up, he wouldn’t dare. He felt her breath as she nuzzled the top of his head and nearly shook with anticipation.
It felt like acceptance, God please let it be, because she moved ever so slightly to his neck. Her heavy exhale ruffled his fur, and he swallowed hard. His chest heaved with every nervous breath. This moment was so monumental. At that moment, Cass struck. Her teeth sank into his flesh and Darren howled. Damn the consequences. He couldn’t care less if his howl drew every Lycan in Europe to their location. He’d been claimed.
The fear was gone. The feeling that he wasn’t good enough didn’t matter. The guilt over having fathered a child with someone other than his mate was shelved for another day. Cass. Claimed. Him. And damned if he didn’t feel freer than he’d ever felt.
She pulled back and licked his fur. Darren shuddered. Cass’s touch felt as essential to him as his next breath. He wasn’t letting this go. As soon as they were shifted, and he could find a bed private enough for what he had planned, Darren was going
