Love stories are universal. Love stories are powerful.  And so are the women who write them.

Love Between the Covers is the fascinating story of the vast, funny, and savvy female community that has built a powerhouse industry sharing love stories.  Romance fiction is sold in 34 languages on six continents, and the genre grosses more than a billion dollars a year — outselling mystery, sci-fi, and fantasy combined.  Yet the millions of voracious women (and sometimes men) who read, write, and love romance novels have remained oddly invisible. Until now.

For three years, we follow the lives of five very diverse published romance authors and one unpublished newbie as they build their businesses, find and lose loved ones, cope with a tsunami of change in publishing, and earn a living doing what they love—while empowering others to do the same. Romance authors have built a fandom unlike all others, a global sisterhood where authors know their readers personally and help them become writers themselves. During the three years we’ve been shooting Love Between the Covers, we have witnessed the biggest power shift that has taken place in the publishing industry over the last 200 years. And it’s the romance authors who are on the front lines, pioneering new ways to survive and build communities in this rapidly changing environment.

Love Between the Covers is a documentary about the Romance Publishing Industry.  The film created by Award Winning filmmaker Laurie Kahn gives the viewer a look inside the world of romance publishing.  Kahn does an excellent job of getting to the heart of “why we all love romance novels, why authors write them and how the romance community celebrates them. Thank you to the filmmaker, the distributor, and Tasty PR for giving me the opportunity to review Love Between the Covers. I’ve been looking forward to watching it since I first heard about it.

I absolutely LOVE romance and anyone like me that loves taking a journey into a writers’ world will adore Love Between the Covers.  I may have been reading most of my life but it has only been in the last six years that books, authors and other readers have become such an integral part of my life. Therefore, I can completely relate with the themes throughout the documentary.  Love Between the Covers is a romance in itself and it definitely has a H.E.A!

One of the first statements made is “Everybody’s Writing Romance.” How true! Romance novels are a multi-billion dollar business that explore so many genres it’s impossible to name them all. Every time someone asks me what I like to read I’m all of the sudden like a deer in headlights because it’s impossible to narrow it down to one thing and at the same time just saying, “I like romance” doesn’t even begin to cover it. Love Between the Covers explores the popularity of romance in the past and present.  There are several authors that take the viewer through their process and how they got where they are right now.  We also get a look at the reader which so many of us will appreciate 🙂

As I begin Love Between the Covers I asked myself why I love romance.  Which was a good idea since that is one of the themes of the film.  My sister actually gifted me with a copy of Danielle Steele’s The Ring when I was about 12 and I loved it but I didn’t become consumed with romance until my mid-twenties.  At that time in my life I was doing a lot of self-discovery. I was deciding not only what I wanted to do in my life but who I wanted to be.  Several of the authors pointed out that romance novels are about female empowerment. Romance novels really gave me the courage to believe in myself.  While they are fiction, reading about a woman that can take care of herself and fight for who and what she wants was really powerful to 22 year old me. I started believing that I could do the same.

The film touches on how Romance brings us together.  This is one thing I love about the romance community.  I enjoyed the glimpses inside the Romance Writers of America conference. I love conferences. They are so much fun and a great place for readers and authors to meet and celebrate their love of reading.  For the most part everyone in the romance community is there with a hand out to help and welcome a newbie. Love Between the Covers is a fascinating documentary that entertains the viewer.  It is at times playful and emotional.  I was especially touched by Author Beverly Jenkins throughout the film.  She made me laugh and cry! I found all of the Author’s stories inspirational. I think anyone that enjoys romance will love the documentary.
