Orphaned and alone, Jasminda lives in a land where cold whispers of invasion and war linger on the wind. Jasminda herself is an outcast in her homeland of Elsira, where her gift of Earthsong is feared. When ruthless soldiers seek refuge in her isolated cabin, they bring with them a captive–an injured spy who threatens to steal her heart.

Jack’s mission behind enemy lines to prove that the Mantle between Elsira and Lagrimar is about to fall nearly cost him his life, but he is saved by the healing Song of a mysterious young woman. Now he must do whatever it takes to save Elsira and its people from the True Father and he needs Jasminda’s Earthsong to do it. They escape their vicious captors and together embark on a perilous journey to save Elsira and to uncover the secrets of The Queen Who Sleeps.

Thrust into a hostile society, Jasminda and Jack must rely on one another even as secrets jeopardize their bond. As an ancient evil gains power, Jasminda races to unlock a mystery that promises salvation.

The fates of two nations hang in the balance as Jasminda and Jack must choose between love and duty to fulfill their destinies and end the war.

Author L. Penelope has developed a unique and interesting premise with her Earthsinger Chronicles.  The first book Song of Blood and Stone introduces us to Jasminda and Jack. These two come from vastly different backgrounds and therefore have different agendas.  I truly enjoyed getting to know both of them.  It is easy to become emotionally involved in these characters with Ms. Penelope’s highly entertaining, high octane writing style.

Jasminda is a captivating heroine.  She has faced many hardships that have made her a force to be reckoned with.  I found her Earthsinger abilities to be incredibly fascinating.  Jack has all the qualities a girl could ask for in her hero.  He is very easy to fall for and root for! When these two get together you can feel the power on the pages.  They go on quite the journey in Song of Blood and Stone discovering an epic romance along the way!  I don’t want to give anything away but I will tell you things move fast in the best ways.  I was glued to the pages and finished in one sitting.  I am looking forward to the next book in the Earthsinger ChroniclesSong of Blood and Stone is the perfect read for every young adult lover but excellent for us adults as well.

The stunningly original, must-read fantasy of 2018 follows two fiercely independent young women, centuries apart, who hold the power to save their world...or doom it.

When assassins ambush her best friend, Rielle Dardenne risks everything to save him, exposing herself as one of a pair of prophesied queens: a queen of light, and a queen of blood. To prove she is the Sun Queen, Rielle must endure seven elemental magic trials. If she fails, she will be executed...unless the trials kill her first.

One thousand years later, the legend of Queen Rielle is a fairy tale to Eliana Ferracora. A bounty hunter for the Undying Empire, Eliana believes herself untouchable―until her mother vanishes. To find her, Eliana joins a rebel captain and discovers that the evil at the empire's heart is more terrible than she ever imagined.

As Rielle and Eliana fight in a cosmic war that spans millennia, their stories intersect, and the shocking connections between them ultimately determine the fate of their world―and of each other.

Author Claire Legrand’s novel FURYBORN is a fantastical novel featuring alluring, tenacious characters and an unforgettable heart-stopping story.

Furyborn is brimming with strong, fiery female characters that will have you cheering even as they do some dangerous and at times despicable things.  I was so taken with the blurb I could not wait to read this novel.  The idea of a story essentially taking place during two different lifetimes was intriguing, add in the fantasy, romance and action elements and I was hooked.  I was not disappointed.  Furyborn is enrapturing from page one.  It’s impossible to miss the life or death tension within the first few scenes.  I could feel my heart beating wildly as one OMG thing after another happened until my mind exploded with understanding of what was going to happen next.

At first, I was afraid that Legrand’s use of a nonlinear narrative would become confusing as I tried to discover how the two plots would sync up and remember the many characters that came with them.  Thankfully, Legrand is quite skillful with her pen. In Furyborn, she creates such unique, memorable characters and plotlines it is easy to keep track of everything.  The worldbuilding within Furyborn is without a doubt one of the most skilled I’ve read.  The imagery and plot make it easy to imagine yourself in the line of fire with the characters.

As a reader you always know going into one of these stories there is a good chance you’re going to find your heart breaking in some manner before it’s over.  In Furyborn, the chances of this happening are double since we are dealing with two heroines.  Rielle and Eliana are fiercely independent women with a passionate need to protect the people they love.  They have lives and ideals of their own, but they are thrown into the middle of a long-foretold prophecy within their kingdoms.  As this prophecy begins to take over their lives they are forced to discover what they are truly made of.  Following them both on their trail of self-discovery is intense and marvelous.  I love the fact that these women are not purely good or evil which is the conclusion other characters would like to draw about them.  Both Rielle and Eliana have many rich layers of personality, conscience and desires that drive them in fascinating ways.  The men in their lives are equally dashing and entrancing.

I did not want Furyborn to end and when it did I was left with a desperate need to discover what would happen next.  I will be counting down the days until the next novel in the Empirium trilogy releases.  I must know what happens to the characters that I’ve become insanely attached to!

Furyborn is a phenomenally haunting novel that will leave you breathless and extremely satisfied.  The remarkable drama, intense action sequences and the bewitching fantasy make Furyborn a Joyfully Recommended Read.

**Furyborn is classified as a young adult novel but due to the age of the main characters, violence and sexual situations I consider it a New Adult.

Virginia Troy is the owner of an art gallery in Seattle.  When one of her artists turns up dead, Virginia has a good reason to believe that it was murder.  Virginia is one of the few survivors of a cult that was destroyed when she was a child, and the missing author was one of her mother’s few friends with in the cult.  Virginia knows she can’t take her suspicions to just anyone; but Anson Salinas, the man who helped save the children from the fire, happens to be a partner in a private investigation firm.  He is the one person Virginia knows she can hire that will take her seriously.

Cabot Sutter is one of the surviving children from the cult who was adopted by Anson.  He is also one of the main investigators in the firm.  When Virginia shows up with her concerns and wants to hire the firm to find out exactly what happened when the artist was killed, Cabot is assigned to the case.  Cabot and Virginia certainly have some past history in having lived in and survived the cult.  As a result, both are wary in letting anyone get too close, yet they quickly become a firm partnership as they start to follow the clues and every lead to find out not only  what happened the night an artist fell off a cliff, but also just what exactly happened the night the fire destroyed the cult compound.

Quinton Zane was the cult leader who decided to try and kill all of his followers when the law came down on him.  During the events of the evening, it was unsure if the cult leader had been killed somehow or if he got away when it was all over.   As Cabot and Virginia begin getting a few answers, they begin to suspect that Quinton got away and still lives.  The danger multiplies as more answers are located and, even as each turn seems to bring even more danger, Virginia and Cabot also discover that some of the sparks are actually coming from them.  It seems that romance doesn’t care what is going on around you when love is meant to be.  The final answers prove Virginia was right, and yet it is a surprise on who was actually behind everything.  The question is: Is all the horror of the cult and its ending finally, over or is there more out there to be discovered and ended?

Scars on the inside can be much more harming than those on the outside as both Cabot and Virginia learned growing up as survivors of a cult that went out in a deadly blaze in Promise Not To Tell.  I really loved how Virginia and Cabot forged forward even when the outcome brought out things they really didn’t want to think about again.  I also enjoyed trying to figure out the clues as I read along during their adventures.  I was surprised at how well Cabot and Virginia matched up once their attraction was undeniable.  At first, I was sure they were just too far apart, even with the shared background.  If you love a great suspense, then you can’t miss with giving Promise Not To Tell a read.  While not a series, one of Cabot’s other adopted brothers is the hero of When All The Girls Have Gone.

Series: Gargoyles #

Ivy Beckett has always known about the Guardians and the Wardens—the humans who help keep the humans safe from the darkness with the Guardians.  The males in her family have been Wardens for several generations.  All the families who are Wardens have special gifts.  Ivy’s gift is distant hearing, which is something that Ivy considers a curse, especially when she hears her uncle and cousin being killed.  Now Ivy works hard to help other Wardens escape to safety.  It is a type of underground railroad that has been set up by others in the know about the Guild.  All is good until the night Ivy is placed in danger while trying to help yet another Warden escape harm.

Baen is one of the gargoyle Guardians of the Light.  He has been asleep for centuries until he is awoken by a call—a call that seems to come from Ivy.  Once Baen takes care of the demons, he begins to see that the world has definitely changed since the last time he was awakened.  First off, the Guild no longer exists, the Wardens are being killed, and the really strange fact is that no one knew where the Guardians had been put to sleep.  That last fact meant that no one knew where to go to wake them up when the darkness threatened.

As Baen and Ivy begin to answer his questions, they also begin a search to see if any other Guardians had been awoken.  This search is quickly answered in such a way that again shocks both Ivy and Baen.  With Baen, all but one of the Guardians have been found and awoken and now one of the Guardians is a woman—something that never happened before.  Most shocking is that several of the high demons have been released already, and the Order is determined to bring the other four over.  Ivy and Baen are joined by the other five Guardians and their Wardens only to discover that the last Guardian has been awake the longest of all, and it appears did not try to locate and wake up the others.  There are serious questions and answers going around as all of the Guardians and Wardens, along with the underground, prepare for a final showdown.  By the end of this, either the Guardians of the Light will have once again defeated the darkness or the world will have descended into darkness and horror.

A woman trying to help light win the threat of darkness soon as a special partnership with a Guardian in Hard Breaker.  Ivy was all that a lover and Warden should be for a Guardian, both feisty and determined.  I found Baen was of the same mold as all the Guardians but, like them, he found that love could allow him to bend and let his mate be in danger in order to defeat the darkness. I enjoyed watching as Ivy and Baen found their own forever love.  I loved the final battle, because it showed Ivy that her gift was not a curse, but a special gift.  It was proved once again that when the dust settled, it was love that won the day.  Hard Breaker is a mixture of suspense and humor that had me turning the pages to see what would happen next.  While this is the end of the series, I now know just how well the light won against the darkness and that all I have to do is open up my books to once again watch as each Guardian meets their special Warden and love rules the day.

Lady Murine Carmichael seems to attract bad luck, and she is tired of letting others control her fate.  Discovering that a family member seeks to sell her in exchange for horses, Lady Murine Carmichael determines to venture out alone in the harsh country for sanctuary with a dear friend.  Not worried about what or whom she may come across Murine feels that the outside world cannot be any worse than what she has endured at home.

Dougall Buchanan comes across a comely lass in need of escort in the wilds of the countryside and, being the gentleman that he is, he steps up to provide for her, since Dougall has just dealt with the treacherous individual who was willing to sell her for some prime horses!  During their journey, Dougall discovers more than he thought he would, and now he finds that he can’t part with Lady Murine Carmichael.  However, someone is willing to see that young lass depart more than just the company of the Highlander.

Falling for the Highlander is a sweet, charming tale.  However, I felt that Murine wasn’t as smart as everyone in Falling for the Highlander seemed to believe.  She seemed rather naïve and couldn’t seem to think beyond what is clearly evident to all others in Falling for the Highlander.  I found her weakness rather annoying, and I wondered why all the characters claimed she was so brilliant when some of the things she came up with seemed like common sense.  I did enjoy the chemistry between Dougall and Murine in Falling for the Highlander, but I don’t think I’ll reread this story.
