ROMANCING ROBIN HOOD!
ROMANCING ROBIN HOOD by Jenny Kane
Dr Grace Harper has loved the stories of Robin Hood ever since she first saw them on TV as a girl. Now, with her fortieth birthday just around the corner, she’s a successful academic in Medieval History, with a tenured position at a top university.
But Grace is in a bit of a rut. She’s supposed to be writing a textbook on a real-life medieval gang of high-class criminals – the Folvilles – but she keeps being drawn into the world of the novel she’s secretly writing – a novel which entwines the Folvilles with her long-time love of Robin Hood – and a feisty young girl named Mathilda, who is the key to a medieval mystery…
Meanwhile, Grace’s best friend Daisy – who’s as keen on animals as Grace is on the Merry Men – is unexpectedly getting married, and a reluctant Grace is press-ganged into being her bridesmaid. As Grace sees Daisy’s new-found happiness, she starts to re-evaluate her own life. Is her devotion to a man who may or may not have lived hundreds of years ago really a substitute for a real-life hero of her own? It doesn’t get any easier when she meets Dr Robert Franks – a rival academic who Grace is determined to dislike but finds herself being increasingly drawn to…
Please tell us a bit about your latest release.
Many thanks for inviting me along today!
My latest release, Romancing Robin Hood, is a contemporary romance novel- but it is also a fourteenth century mystery. A story within a story- I mix modern romance with legendry medieval crime.
I’ve been a fan of Robin Hood ever since I saw Michael Praed and Jason Connery strut their outlaw stuff in the 1980’s television series, Robin of Sherwood. Like Grace in the novel, I am pretty obsessive about anything Robin Hood-ish, and even did a PhD on the subject.
It is so easy to become consumed with a passion like that. I wanted to write a novel about someone who’d -without realizing it- had their life taken over by their obsession, and how their life changes once they realize that they’ve left little time for anything else…
What is your favorite romance genre and what author makes you absolutely swoon?
I’m a real fan of the feet-up, ‘curl upon the sofa with a mug of coffee cosy’ sort of romance. I love the work of Katie Fforde, because her books are always a good read- you always know it’ll be alright. After a day of writing twisting and turning erotica (as Kay Jaybee), it is wonderful to read something that makes you feel better!
When I’m writing as Jenny however, I tend not to read romances, but crime novels or thrillers.
What is your dream vacation spot?
I would just love to go on a cruise around Antarctica! Maybe one day- I just need to sell a few more books first!
What do you think has been the most important moment or event of your life so far? And why do you feel that way?
It was the day I decided which university I would go to. If I hadn’t chosen to go to Leicester, I would not have met my husband, nor had my two beautiful children. I wouldn’t have made the friends I made, and therefore my first Jenny Kane novel, Another Cup of Coffee would never have been written (it is loosely based on my amazing student friends). As a result of how well that book has sold, I was asked to write Romancing Robin Hood. So if I hadn’t decided to go to that university all those years ago, I wouldn’t be doing this interview now!!
Is there anything else you would like our readers to know?
I’d love to be able to say thank you to everyone who has supported me by buying Another Cup of Coffee and its sequel Another Cup of Christmas. This Christmas another novella in the series will be released, Another Cup of Mulled Wine.
I’m currently working on my next romance- set in Cornwall- Abi’s Place will be out in Summer 2015.
Many thanks xxx
