The climactic novel in the bestselling Midnight Breed series, of which BookPage raves: “If you like romance combined with heart-stopping paranormal suspense, you’re going to love this book.” In the dark of night, a blood war escalates within the hidden world of the Breed. After maintaining a fragile peace with the humans who walk beside them unaware, a single act of retaliation has put the vampire nation at risk of discovery. It falls to the Order—a cadre of Breed warriors pledged to protect their own and humankind alike—to stop Dragos, the power-mad vampire, before his push for domination explodes into catastrophe. At the center of the Order’s quest is Sterling Chase, whose biggest battle is the one he wages against his own savage nature. But when his eyes meet those of Tavia Fairchild, Chase finds himself drawn to the woman—and convinced she is something much more than she seems. And while everything logical warns Tavia against getting close to Chase, she cannot deny that he stirs something ravenous within her. As the Order’s enemy mobilizes for the battle of the ages, Chase and Tavia are thrust into the heart of the violence. With time running out, they must find a way to defeat Dragos once and for all—or die trying.
Tavia Fairchild works for a US Senator, which she enjoys until the night that a man comes into one of the Senator’s parties and starts shooting. That night will turn Tavia’s life upside down, but not in a way any one would suspect. What Tavia learns is that her entire life has been a lie and her reality is more like something you would expect to find in a book or a movie. Funny enough, the man who was shooting turns out to be her touchstone during a time that seems to go insane for Tavia.
Sterling Chase has gone full circle, from a respected leader of his family and a member of law enforcement to a warrior Breed in the Order and now he finds himself arrested and all but giving into a blood lust that will spell out his doom. Sterling gave himself up as a sacrifice in order to save the Order and their families. Knowing he has to get away from the human police, Sterling is plotting and planning and then sees the Senator’s assistant. There is just something about her that calls out to Sterling .
Tavia and Sterling discover many things as they race to find the answers that will hopefully end this nasty war that the Order has been fighting with Dragos. At the same time, the truth about what Tavia is turns the Breed world on its ears. If this isn’t enough, other truths are coming out as the Sterling and Tavia work to bring the Order closer to the ultimate battle that will either be the end of civilization, both human and Breed, as it has been known or it will be the end of Dragos and his plans to rule the world. What the morning will bring only time can tell.
A man who has all but given up on finding love meets a woman who has lived a lie – their passion will help save the world in Darker After Midnight. I have been waiting to see Chase get his mate from the time he first appeared. I have laughed with him and cried at things that have happened to him as the books have gone on. It figures that his mate would be unlike anything anyone would have dreamed of. I loved Tavia and really loved how she fought so hard for Chase and their love. The path that Chase and Tavia had to follow was not an easy one nor was it without some serious bumps and bruises, and yet they never swayed from the paths that were set for them. The final battle had me holding my breath in several places and cheering for the Order. I was hoping that after that battle Tavia and Chase would have time to learn about this amazing love they had, but it really was only the beginning of their personal battles. Their ending has me sighing as I turned the last page. Darker After Midnight expresses love of many forms, passion and suspense that keeps you on your toes while serving up the best ending possible for the battle that has been ongoing.
I started this book believing (wrongly) that it was the last in the Midnight Breed series and believe me when I tell you it more than fulfilled that title. Enough that I just had to Joyfully Recommend it. However, I learned as I was getting ready to write this that it is not the last book of the series. I found two more listed on Ms. Adrian’s website. While at this moment I have no idea what direction the series is heading, I can’t wait to see what the next adventures of the humans and the Breeds turn out to be. While each book can be read as a stand alone, I would highly recommend that you read them in order to follow the entire plot.
