In the past few years I have read a few of Lorraine Heath’s stories and really enjoyed them but this was my first book in The Hellions of Havisham series and I just couldn’t put it down. The Viscount and the Vixen takes readers on a journey of love and desperation that quickly won me over from the beginning.
Killian St. John, Viscount Locksley, has watched his father’s grief turn to madness after his mother’s death years ago but his latest madness has gone too far. When Viscount Locksley finds out his father has put an ad out for a new bride he knows he has to try to stop it, but upon meeting Portia he realizes there is only one thing he can do to protect his father and that is to offer a marriage of convenience, after all he needs an heir. Upon their first meeting Killian knows he is attracted to her so bedding her won’t be a problem but what he doesn’t count on is his feelings growing stronger as the days begin to pass and he comes to realize that he may not be able to live without Portia.
Portia is desperate so when she starts exchanging letters with Killian’s father she knows exactly what she is getting into but what she doesn’t count on is Killian offering up to take his father’s place to protect him from another heartbreak. Portia begins to care for Killian but when a trip to London threatens to reveal her big secret she flees only to have Killian come to find her, but can their love last on a lie?
I really got caught up in The Viscount and the Vixen right from the beginning. While this trope has been done before Ms Heath brings a fresh new voice to these thrilling characters that really blew me away. I loved the banter and the attraction between Killian and Portia. I wasn’t sure about them as a couple but after their first night together I was floored on how well these two were made for one another.
At first I wasn’t sure if I was going to like Portia because she seemed so desperate to hide out just to be protected from something, but as her story starts to unfold my heart started to go out to her and I couldn’t believe how strong she was after everything she has been through and was going through. While I never wished myself in a historical novel before, if I had to now it would definitely be in The Viscount and the Vixen.
The Viscount and the Vixen was a beautifully told story that was entertaining but also brought many emotions to the surface. I believe readers will find they won’t be able to put it down. Since this was my first book in The Hellions of Havisham series I am already dying to start at the very beginning. I highly recommend The Viscount and the Vixen to everyone especially those who believe in fairytale endings.
