The clutch of gargoyles in Durango immediately offers Roland sanctuary. Before he has time to settle into a life of freedom Tobias, the clutch second announces that they are mates. At four hundred years of age Tobias is overjoyed to find his mate at last and then devastated when Roland rejects him.
Roland refuses to saddle the gargoyle with a defective mate. Tobias however insists they can work through any problems. As far as Roland is concerned nothing can be done. Nothing. He can’t be a mate, ever.
