Released after close to a decade spent in a Texas prison for a crime he honestly didn’t commit Isaiah ‘Ike’ Hernandez is heading home. The destination is the small mining town of Esperanza, New Mexico. as Ike stumbles along the highway in a freezing storm, clutching the tiny red dog he found abandoned and starving two days ago.
When a car stops to give Ike a much needed lift it takes him a few seconds to realize he’s getting a ride from a cop. Deputy Sheriff Perry Parker and his faithful partner Badger are on their way home at the end of their shift when the cop spots someone weaving along the deserted stretch of highway.
As they talk Ike finds out that the mining town is gone and everyone has drifted away. Perry decides to offer him a place to stay and even some job ideas after coming to the conclusion that the ex-con deserves a second chance. Maybe it’s dumb but Badger seems to like him, trust him, and his dog’s always been a good judge of character.
As Ike begins to settle into life on the outside Perry hears rumors of a new drug dealer in town. Once again Ike may end up in the wrong place at the wrong time…unless, maybe this time he’s got someone protecting his back.
A Cop and a Con is a heartwarming tale of love and redemption. The characters feel genuine, the plotline is fast paced and entertaining. There’s also a nice little hook with danger and drug dealers to round out the story. Overall a positive, feel good read. Lighten your day with A Cop and a Con.
