An escape to an idyllic Irish seaside village is about to turn deadly in this riveting new novel by master of romantic suspense Carla Neggers For marine biologist Julianne Maroney, two weeks in tiny Declan's Cross on the south Irish coast is a chance to heal her broken heart. She doesn't expect to attract the attention of FBI agents Emma Sharpe and Colin Donovan—especially since a Donovan is the reason for her broken heart. Emma and Colin are in Ireland for their own personal retreat. Colin knows he's a reminder of everything Julianne wants to escape, but something about her trip raises his suspicion. Emma, an art crimes expert, is also on edge. Of all the Irish villages Julianne could choose…why Declan's Cross? Ten years ago, a thief slipped into a mansion in Declan's Cross. Emma's grandfather, a renowned art detective, investigated, but the art stolen that night has never been recovered and the elusive thief never caught. From the moment Julianne sets foot on Irish soil, everything goes wrong. The well-connected American diver who invited her to Ireland has disappeared. And now Emma and Colin are in Declan's Cross asking questions. As a dark conspiracy unfolds amid the breathtaking scenery of Declan's Cross, the race is on to stop a ruthless killer…and the stakes have never been more personal for Emma and Colin.
Emma Sharp and Colin Donovan are still in Ireland after their last case when they find out that a woman from Colin’s hometown, and who just broke up with one of his brothers, is suddenly coming to a small Ireland town to work/consult in a marine research facility being developed. Since it’s a sudden move, Colin and Emma decide to travel to Declan’s Cross and make sure everything is okay. They know that seeing them probably is the last thing Julianne wants since her broken heart is from a Donovan after all.
Julianne Maroney is a marine biologist who jumped at the chance to head to Ireland and check out the marine research center that her new friend and diver is starting up. However, things immediately start going wrong from the moment Julianne arrives at the airport – her friend isn’t there to pick her up as arranged. Nor is she at the cottage Julianne rented and agreed to share for the two weeks. To top it off Colin Donovan and his girlfriend Emma Sharp show up. When Julianne finds her friend dead on the cliff rocks a few days later, Julianne is happy that Emma and Colin are still around.
As Emma and Colin search for answers on why the woman was killed, there are more questions than answers and it seems that even some of the questions are missing at times. As some of the answers are located, things in the dead woman’s past bring up an art heist that Emma’s grandfather has been trying to solve for many years. It’s a tricky tightrope of an investigation with all the secrets that the little town of Declan’s Cross seems to be hiding. While looking for what happened to the dead woman and keeping Julianne from any lurking danger, Emma and Colin are also trying to figure out their next steps as a couple. The answers become very clear but have they been discovered in time to keep Julianne, Emma and Colin safe or will the real killer get away with murder?
What has a marine research center, an unsolved art heist and murder have in common? It’s going to take Emma and Colin’s skills to find the answers and keep a friend safe in Declan’s Cross. The road to romance has certainly been bumpy for Emma and Colin so far. Of course as FBI agents, danger is part of their job but I wasn’t surprised when their vacation was interrupted when a friend found a body. I was amazed by all the twists and turns that seemed to be around the death. I had to smile as I watched Colin try to stay out of the relationship between Julianne and his brother. There were times I was worried about Emma and Colin’s relationship, they seemed so different, and yet that seemed to have been the key to bringing them closer together. Sharpe and Donovan got their man again and more importantly they also got each other. Even better, at the end there was more than one happy ending. Declan’s Cross is a great mixture of suspenseful twists and turns intermixed with passion and star crossed lovers all of which came together as a book you really don’t want to put down ‘til the end.
