From the time he was a little boy Warren Updegrove dreamed of playing professional football. A decent showing in college led to a position with the Jacksonville Jaguars, but after a year Warren was cut from the team. He was realistic enough to know he didn’t have a gift so he wasn’t surprised. The problem was Warren didn’t have a backup plan.
At the urging of his friend, Thom Lodge, who had tutored Warren in college he got a decent job as a personal trainer at a high end gym. His friendship with Thom had evolved into a ‘friends with benefit’ kind of thing over time. They couldn’t be more unalike. Thom has always been out and proud. Warren on the other hand grew up in the South in a strict Baptist household where homosexuality was worse than, well just about anything. That was one of the main reasons he’d settled near Thom in the Miami area, going home wasn’t an option.
Lately Warren’s been feeling kind of lost and directionless. The job has lost its shine, he’s drinking too much and his muscle is going to flab. An accidental introduction with former Olympian Victor Ragazzo at one of Thom’s parties steers Warren in a direction he’d never imagined when he’s invited to tryouts for the International Gay Rugby Team and Board. He knows little about rugby and even less about how to handle a sexually aggressive Victor. Talking to Thom about another man seems awkward. Suddenly life is giving Warren more options than he can handle.
Life takes many unexpected turns in Love on the Pitch. An uptight, naïve man explores his options. The main character stumbles, he back steps, and misses the signs. Until finally he succeeds. Showing relationships as they are – messy, complicated and irritating – Love on the Pitch is the real deal. Warts and all. Proving that life is all about choice.
