Against her will, Kitala Bell can foresee the future. But only darkness and violence . . . and death. And nowit is her own future that is in peril. Her fate is in the hands of a prince of the sea.More than a man—impossibly beautiful and dangerous, with a voice that can seduce and hypnotize—M’cal’s song manipulates lives the way Kitala coaxessweet music from the strings of her violin. Yet heis a prisoner, the captive of a malevolent mistress intenton using his powers to evil ends, and stretchedto the very limits of his endurance. For Kitala, he is lightand hope and fantasy, and survival for them bothrequires a bond more intimate and passionate thaneither has ever known. But it comes at a pr ice,for their love threatens not only the lives they’ve alwaysknown . . . but the very essence of their souls.

M’Cal, a merman, is slave to an evil witch ever since he foolishly fell under her spell. He was naïve thinking himself in love with her and he’s paid the price ever since. The witch forces him to take the souls of unsuspecting victims and give them to her so she may remain young and powerful. M’Cal would give anything to regain his freedom and rid the world of the evil witch.

Kitala Bell can see the future. How unfortunate the future she sees is people’s deaths. Kit is a famous concert violinist. She takes such pleasure in creating and sharing her music with the world. She thought her visions of blood and death had finally receded until, in the midst of a concert, she sees an audience member’s death. When Kit attempts to warn the woman she gets drawn into a web of danger and deceit.

M’Cal has been ordered to take Kit’s soul but can’t bring himself to take her life. Instead he joins her cause to help the mysterious woman marked for death but how long can he resist the witch’s call to take Kit’s soul? Is it possible M’Cal and Kits connection runs deeper than lust at first site? Will they live long enough to find out?

Soul Song is another excellent Dirk & Steele novel from Marjorie M. Liu! I’m amazed at Ms. Liu’s ability to keep this series fresh and captivating. Each new novel adds cool characters, sinister villains and hot locales to the thrilling series. I got wrapped up into M’Cal and Kit’s story. Both characters are unique and interesting, easy to root for. The passion between them is scorching. I really thought M’Cal’s character evolved nicely throughout the story. He’s so unhappy and negative at the beginning but as the story unfolds so do the layers of his personality. Kit is the perfect woman for M’Cal. I love their intense interactions in Soul Song. Whether its danger, conversation or intimate moments these two characters shine brightly together.
