Lazaro Archer has been working non-stop for the Order since the night his entire family was massacred, except for the one member who was with him and away from the family home at the time. Even Lazaro’s Breedmate was brutally murdered. Now Lazaro is trying to help the Order make a political alliance with one of the major human families in Europe. It will be a tricky meeting, but Lazaro has no worries, because he knows the Breed ambassador who is coming to the meeting. That all changes as the meeting begins, and ends, with murder.
Melena Walsh is a Breedmate and the daughter to the ambassador. She knows that her appearance at the meeting is breaking the arranged rules, but she also knows that she couldn’t tell her father “no”, or the meeting might not have happened. All appears to be going great as the meeting goes on, with the exception of Lazaro’s glaring at her and treating her like the child he once met and saved. Just as it appears that not only is the meeting a success and the alliance will happen, the night erupts in flames and Melena’s life is forever changed.
Lazaro manages to save Melena from drowning, gets her to safety, and learns the real reason she was there at all. He knows that somewhere, the Breeds were betrayed and good men were lost. What Lazaro cannot accept is the feeling that he has towards Melena and his longing to make her his Breedmate. Having lived through the pain of losing his previous Breedmate, the last thing he wants is to risk that type of pain ever again. Melena is surprised by the passion she feels towards Lazaro, but she could have accepted it, if he didn’t push her away every chance he has. Melena accepts Lazaro’s feelings and leaves only to find the worst betrayal and danger ever imagined. Lazaro realizes his huge mistake almost immediately and goes after Melena just as he feels her terror. Can he make it to Melena before whatever is threatening her can harm her?
A night filled with death and betrayal begins a journey of passion and love in Tempted by Midnight. Melena and Lazaro have much more to work through than falling in love as they met for a second time. Lazaro has lived the last several years only worrying about what the Order needs from him to succeed while striving to get it. For the most part, Melena, since reaching adulthood, has been sheltered through working with her father. While I could understand why Lazaro acted the way he did, I was almost glad when he sent Melena away so she wouldn’t have to deal with his bitter pain. However, I knew that something would happen to bring them back together—not that I would have guessed the mad twist at the end. Tempted by Midnight shows that everyone can be given a second chance to discover love, you only have to accept it.
