The darkest secrets are the hardest to unearth. Secret McQueen, Book 6After her last mission tested the limits of her humanity and took her out of this world, Secret’s friends, determined to keep her safe from her old nemesis Alexandre Peyton, keep ushering her from one babysitter to the next. Couch surfing would be a lot more fun if Alexandre would let up on her long enough to allow her to get in some alone time with her lovers. Including Holden, her self-appointed shadow. As if living out of coffin isn’t bad enough, Secret literally brings down the house while hunting a rogue, causing the council to exile her from New York—for her own safety, of course. With her list of people to trust getting shorter and shorter, Secret ends up embroiled in a mystery to find a vampire warden gone AWOL and a missing artifact. Things go from bad to worse when she falls into the hands of a man who will prove that humans can be the worst monsters of them all. Warning: Contains a cross-country journey, an unexpected family reunion, heated lovers’ embraces and a hell of a lot of trouble.
With the fallout from her last mission, which took Secret to her ultimate limits and at the end of which she discovered her biggest foe, Alexandre Peyton, had escaped, Secret has been trading one couch for another at friend’s homes. Being babysat is driving her up the wall to say the least. Heck, Secret hasn’t even been able to spend any time with either of her lovers. But when Secret steps in at the last minute to help one of her protégés with a capture of a rogue – this time she brings down the house.
Holden and Secret are shipped out to LA to help that council solve a problem. Secret isn’t happy about this assignment but she can’t argue much when it’s from the leader of her council. However, once Secret and Holden arrive in LA it’s to find out that certain things were left out from her folder – like just who it would be that she is hunting. Secret thought the New York council was messed up, but she now see that maybe they are one of sanest councils in the bunch.
Secret is now on the hunt for a vampire warden who appears to have gone AWOL and an artifact seems to be behind everything. As Secret and Holden follow the clues in hopes of discovering exactly what happened, they will find a monster even worse than vampires. They now know exactly what happened with the vampire warden and he didn’t go AWOL at all. The horrors that Secret and Holden will endure will only be countered by their belief that they can get out alive and by Secret keeping it together to get them out. Rescue comes from a usual avenue. Loyalties are going to be called in to question before everyone can get back to New York. Now Secret must decide if she can accept the price of them being rescued or not.
When Secret and Holden are sent to LA for what seemed to be a simple job, they find that their very existence is threatened before it’s over in Secret Unleashed. I couldn’t believe what Secret came up against in LA and even more, just who it was that she would have to hunt. I have to say that I loved how she didn’t just take the council’s word on what had happened and instead uncovered her own clues. I will say that there is no way I would ever want to go through the horrors that Secret and Holden had to and I know that their love kept them going and that Secret also had the love of Desmond to hold on to. I have no idea where Secret is going to end up or with whom, but I do know that before her journey is over, she will be making her mark on the entire vampire and werewolf societies and I believe they need the shake up. The last twist has me wondering just what is in store for Secret and her men in the future. Secret Unleashed has moments of love and friendship and even more moments of horror and suspense – the most intense book of the series so far in my opinion. If you have been following Secret’s path, this is a must read. If you haven’t meet Secret yet, then go back to the beginning and come on board – it’s a wild ride but one so worth it.
