WHITE HOT by Ilona AndrewsWhite Hot by Ilona Andrews
Series: Hidden Legacy #2
Published by Avon Genres: Paranormal

In a world where magic is power, prestige and money all rolled into one, private investigator Nevada Baylor is an anomaly.  Her magic is rare and she has spent her life barely using her abilities as a truthseeker…until her last case thrust her into the world of magic and politics.  After the near destruction of Houston, life seems to have mostly gone back to normal.  Then Nevada’s latest case shoves her right back into danger.  The shadowy forces that nearly destroyed her city are back and more vicious than ever.  And Nevada isn’t the only one hunting them down.  Connor “Mad” Rogan, the billionaire Prime who gets her blood boiling like no one else, is working alongside her.  A few months apart has done nothing to calm the sparks that are flying between them.  With the stakes so high and numerous threats coming from unseen enemies, neither of them can afford to be distracted.  But sometimes attraction burns too hot to ignore…

White Hot is intense, energetic, and completely engrossing.  I’ve been impatiently waiting for this second Hidden Legacy novel and Ilona Andrews did not disappoint.

Nevada and Rogan are the heart of White Hot and you couldn’t ask for two more interesting, compelling characters (and that’s saying something since the entire cast of characters in this book is fascinating).  Nevada is a kickass heroine with a huge heart, a quick mind, and a spine of steel.  She’s already a well-developed character, but I loved watching her come further into her own when it comes to her magic.  Watching her explore her power was just plain neat, but the consequences of her doing so had me on the edge of my seat more than once over the course of the story.  How she deals with the curveballs thrown at her, and how Rogan helps her do so was fantastic.  And speaking of Rogan, he is one sinfully sexy Prime.  He’s as arrogant as ever, but his protective streak made me melt and I loved peeling back the layers to his character.  He and Nevada make an excellent match.  Their love story kicks into high gear in White Hot and I loved every bit of it.  The back-and-forth, the sexual tension, and the pure emotion that springs off the page was utterly fantastic and made me want to dive right back into this story as soon as I finished it.

White Hot is the second book in the Hidden Legacy trilogy, and you definitely want to read Burn for Me before diving into this story.  There’s not much I can say about the overarching series storyline because it would spoil things for readers.  Suffice it to say that if you thought things were intense in Burn for Me, then buckle up because you’re in for one hell of a ride.  The danger to Nevada, Rogan, and those they care about made it nearly impossible to put the book down.  In fact, pretty much everything about White Hot made the book difficult to put down.  It’s by turns thrilling, romantic, sexy, and unexpectedly funny.  My only complaint is that I now have to wait to delve into the final Hidden Legacy book, Wildfire.  I cannot wait to see what Ilona Andrews has in store for Nevada and Rogan!

BECAUSE OF MISS BRIDGERTONBecause of Miss Bridgerton Series: Rokesbys #1
Published by Avon Genres: Historical

Billie Bridgerton has long known she would likely marry a Rokesby brother.  After all, the Bridgertons and Rokesbys are more family than neighbors and she grew up running wild with Edward, Andrew, and Mary Rokesby.  But when a feral feline rescue goes wrong, it’s George Rokesby, the heir to the earldom, who Billie finds herself stranded with.  George is the one Rokesby Billie cannot abide.  And the feeling is mutual; the two of them are always sniping at each other.

Except…something strange seems to be happening.  Billie feels like she’s truly seeing George for the first time.  And he her.  She couldn’t possibly be falling in love with her favorite nemesis…could she?

Because of Miss Bridgerton is bright, engaging, and utterly charming.  As a longtime fan of Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton series, I was delighted to get a chance to revisit the beloved family, even if in a prequel series.  The titular Miss Bridgerton in this tale is the aunt of the eight beloved siblings, and the clever, competitive, and endearing apples don’t fall too far from the tree.  Billie is the oldest of the Bridgerton siblings, and as there’s such an age gap between her and her younger brother, for a longtime she was raised almost like a boy.  At twenty-three she runs her family estate, taking an interest in agriculture that would surely scandalize society, and she has no interest in settling down.  Billie assumes she’ll one day marry Edward or Andrew Rokesby, and as they are more like brothers to her she’s in no rush to wed.  George is the one Rokesby who drives her mad.  He seems staid and serious and they constantly needle one another.  George complements Billie perfectly.  Yes, he’s quieter than the rest and has been raised never to forget he will inherit an earldom one day.  But George can match Billie jab-for-jab and when they’re not bickering things get surprisingly heated.

Billie and George have a wonderful slow-burn romance and it was fantastic to watch them unwittingly fall in love with one another.  I loved that George not only accepted Billie for the unusual woman that she was, but adored that about her.  And Billie never pressures George to change, but rather comes to admire and love him for his true nature.  They’re both fairly well-adjusted characters, but in falling in love they come fully into who they’re meant to be and it was lovely to watch.

As I previously mentioned, Because of Miss Bridgerton is a prequel of sorts to the beloved Bridgerton series.  It easily stands on its own, but there are some incredibly fun callbacks to the Bridgerton series.  From the Mallet of Death to the appearance of a couple of jovial (if slightly dim) Berbrookes to the behavior of the wonderful Bridgerton and Rokesby siblings, there’s enough in Because of Miss Bridgerton to satisfy Brigerton fans while not overtaking the story.  All in all, I had a blast reading Billie and George’s book – it’s bright, fun, and has all the charm I’ve come to expect from Ms. Quinn’s writing.  I devoured Because of Miss Bridgerton in one sitting and my only complaint is that I have to wait to read the next Rokesbys book, The Girl with the Make-Believe Husband.

IMMORTAL UNCHAINED by Lynsay SandsImmortal Unchained by Lynsay Sands
Series: Argeneau Vampires #25
Published by Avon Genres: Paranormal

Twenty five books in to the Argeneau series and it doesn’t looking like Lynsay Sands will be stopping any time soon. If you have followed the series religiously like I have you know the past few books in the series had the focus on immortals that were being kidnapped and the rogue hunters are getting to the bottom of where their people are disappearing to. Immortal Unchained picks up with that plot but now the rogue hunters are disappearing one by one while searching for the missing immortals and the counsel not only wants to rescue their own but put a stop to what else is about to come.

Domitian Argenis is heading undercover as a personal chef to find the missing rogue hunters when he is kidnapped. The evil doctor has plans for him but he has no idea what to expect when he finds himself chained up naked in the basement of a house on a deserted island. The only good thing about this turn of unexpected events is that his life mate is stranded with him. He has been waiting since Sarita was 13 years old to claim his mate but of course he wanted her to live her life, grow up and experience the human side of the world before he introduced himself. Now that his plans have moved up not only does he want to claim her as his but also make sure she stays safe. Sarita might be a police officer and can handle herself but she is in his world now and it’s about to get dangerous and more interesting.

Sarita has been in Venezuela for 3 days and has yet to lay eyes on her grandmother which is the only reason she has returned bringing back the bad memories of her mother’s kidnapping and death. After receiving a call that her grandmother took a fall she rushed to help her. While checking out the grounds she is currently staying on she comes across a lab where she finds out vampires are real but before she can ask more questions she is knocked out and wakes up alone in a house with no way out. She comes across a vampire all chained up and even though she might not understand them she knows she has to help him get free and find out what really happened to her grandmother. It’s not going to be easy but with Domitian at her side she feels they have a chance. Will they make it out of Venezuela alive and will the people they love be rescued or will they fall victim to the evil doctor that has them cornered?

Immortal Unchained was a delightful yet darker read from the previous books in this series. Ms. Sands usually brings plenty of humor to each story yet this one was missing that and to be honest I really missed her sense of humor. I did enjoy revisiting with some of my favorite characters such as Bricker and Lucian while they were out to find their family and friends. As far as the romance went, it was a little fast for my taste, and I thought Sarita would have put up a little more resistance on being a life mate to an immortal but she really took everything in her stride.

Immortal Unchained was dark, fast paced and kept me invested all the way through. In the end I felt the story was going to be wrapped up but it looks like Ms. Sands is sending her readers on another journey soon and for that I am grateful. While Immortal Unchained could be read as a standalone, I wouldn’t suggest reading it unless you’ve read the prior three books where the mystery behind the immortal disappearances start. And if you have yet to meet the Argeneau family you are missing out on really amazing characters that will surely capture your interest from the beginning.

ALONG CAME LOVE by Tracey LivesayAlong Came Love by Tracey Livesay
Series: Shades of Love #2
Published by Avon Genres: Contemporary, Interracial

Along Came Love is my first book by Tracey Livesay and I found it unique and fresh. The characters were different yet I could see them together which made me enjoy Along Came Love even more than what I was expecting. Since this is the second book in the Shades of Love series at first I was a little lost but as Ms. Livesay included little flash backs I soon felt I was right on track.

India Shaw grew up in foster care and the only people she knows in San Francisco is her adoptive sister, Chelsea, and the man she spent an unbelievable two days with after Chelsea’s wedding. When she shows up pregnant to her sisters penthouse apartment she doesn’t realize that she is out of the country with her new husband and when the door man won’t let her in because she isn’t on the list of approved visitors India does the only thing she can think of and breaks in. But what she doesn’t plan is to have to call Michael Black to be bailed out of jail or telling him that she is pregnant with his child so soon.

Michael spent two wonderful days worshiping India’s body over and over again and no matter what he does he can’t forget her or the way she left. Now back with his girlfriend and ready to launch a new and improved device for his company he is surprised she is back in town and even more surprised that he is going to be a father, but when India makes it clear she is giving the baby up for adoption he has one choice and that is to change her mind. Staying away from India is hard, but after an earth shattering kiss he knows what he has to do and its time he took his life back once and for all.

The plot really stood out because it was different but I had a hard time liking the characters at times. India was impulsive and sometimes seemed a little selfish with not wanting to give the baby to Mike to raise when she was set on adoption. I understand that raising kids is hard work but I just couldn’t see her reasoning, especially because she never truly found a home when she was in that situation. Mike was a little easier to like but his trying to control everything became a little much at times. When he started to take back his life is when I was like yes, finally!

The ending was everything I thought it would be and maybe would have liked more of a surprise and an epilogue to have smoothed it out a little more since I felt it ended rather abruptly.

Ms. Livesay’s writing was captivating and her descriptions pulled me in and while I thought Along Came Love was good it just didn’t fall into the omg I want to read more of this series category. Will I look for more books by this author? Absolutely, because I think Ms. Livesay is one of those authors to keep a look out for.

WHEN A MARQUESS LOVES A WOMAN by Vivienne LorretWhen a Marquess Loves a Woman by Vivienne Lorret
Series: Season's Original #3
Published by Avon Genres: Historical

I first fell in love with Vivienne Lorret’s writing in the previous book in the Season’s Original series, This Earl is on Fire and I have been hooked ever since. Ms. Lorret’s characters are full of wit that keeps me wanting to devour each and every story over and over again.

When a Marquess Loves a Woman is the third book in the Season’s Original series and it’s Max and Juliet’s story. Five years ago Max had his eye on Juliet but with her set to become that Seasons Original she could have picked any man to marry, but when she lost out to another woman, Bram, Max’s brother choose her instead. After being devastated by the news she ends up sharing a kiss with Max before Bram’s engagement announcement. Max offers to marry Juliet but her father isn’t too happy and needs some time to cool down. The next day when Max returns Juliet is gone and he finds out she is to be married to another.

Now five years later Max is still heartbroken and is shocked that Juliet has moved back to London. Juliet wants to buy the house she grew up in but Max isn’t going to make it easy even after all this time. Max and Juliet set a wager in guessing who this season’s original will be. Will Max win and be finally happy if Juliet moves away again or will Juliet win and finally get the house?

When a Marquess Loves a Woman was an enjoyable read that kept me guessing how it would turn out in the end and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised. It took me a few chapters to really get into the characters unlike the pervious book, but I still couldn’t resist their pull to one another. Once I could see that the love was still there even though Max was trying to deny it I ended up having high hopes for this couple and Ms. Lorret delivered.

When a Marquess Loves a Woman made me laugh, cry and root for this couple. Since I haven’t read much of Ms. Lorret’s work I know that I will be definitely looking forward to read more. If you are looking for a historical romance that will not only have you swooning but also believing in second chances you won’t want to miss When a Marquess Loves a Woman.
