Lady Murine Carmichael seems to attract bad luck, and she is tired of letting others control her fate.  Discovering that a family member seeks to sell her in exchange for horses, Lady Murine Carmichael determines to venture out alone in the harsh country for sanctuary with a dear friend.  Not worried about what or whom she may come across Murine feels that the outside world cannot be any worse than what she has endured at home.

Dougall Buchanan comes across a comely lass in need of escort in the wilds of the countryside and, being the gentleman that he is, he steps up to provide for her, since Dougall has just dealt with the treacherous individual who was willing to sell her for some prime horses!  During their journey, Dougall discovers more than he thought he would, and now he finds that he can’t part with Lady Murine Carmichael.  However, someone is willing to see that young lass depart more than just the company of the Highlander.

Falling for the Highlander is a sweet, charming tale.  However, I felt that Murine wasn’t as smart as everyone in Falling for the Highlander seemed to believe.  She seemed rather naïve and couldn’t seem to think beyond what is clearly evident to all others in Falling for the Highlander.  I found her weakness rather annoying, and I wondered why all the characters claimed she was so brilliant when some of the things she came up with seemed like common sense.  I did enjoy the chemistry between Dougall and Murine in Falling for the Highlander, but I don’t think I’ll reread this story.

Series: Hidden Legacy #3
Published by Avon Genres: Paranormal

Nevada Baylor spent years keeping her truthseeker abilities under wraps.  Now that her secret has been revealed, she must hone her powers and learn to navigate the world of a Prime.  Power and politics are something Nevada has long avoided, but she’s in the game now, so to speak. At her side is billionaire Prime Connor “Mad” Rogan, but Nevada’s emerging status as a power player means that their relationship will be tested as others flock to court and manipulate her.  And that isn’t the only strain on their burgeoning relationship – Connor’s ex-fiancée’s husband is missing and she has come to Nevada for help.  Between damsels-in-distress, a new threat to the Baylor family, and a conspiracy that threatens all she holds dear, Nevada may start wishing for the days where her biggest problem was that all of Houston might burn.

Wildfire is an intense, electric read.  Passion, danger, love, and magic are all woven together to form an intelligent, incredibly engaging story.

Nevada and Rogan are fascinating protagonists and one heck of a couple.  They are both strong, intelligent characters who butt heads but also respect one another’s abilities.  Falling in love has given them new sets of vulnerabilities, and I loved watching them navigate their new relationship.  Their love story is by turns sexy, romantic, and intense and I was rooting for them to overcome every obstacle.

Speaking of obstacles, there are a lot thrown in Nevada and Rogan’s way.  I hesitate to say too much for fear of spoiling the book.  Nevada has to decide how best to protect her family.  Now that she’s a known truthseeker, her terrifying paternal grandmother has found out about her.  She also has a new case where Rogan’s needy ex-fiancée is wearing on her nerves and putting a strain on her relationship with Rogan.  Both of these storylines are compelling because they cause internal turmoil, which contrasts nicely with the external threat of the Caesar conspiracy.  This overarching series storyline is where the action ramps up to epic proportions in Wildfire.  Author duo Ilona Andrews brilliantly blends magic and mayhem for maximum thrills and I was so into this book that I hated it whenever real life intruded and I had to put it down.

Wildfire is the third book in the Hidden Legacy series and you definitely should read Burn for Me and White Hot before diving into this tale.  Rogan, Nevada, the entire Baylor family, and their friends have all grown over the course of the series and I loved watching each of them come into their own.  I really hope this isn’t the end of the Hidden Legacy series, because there is so much left to explore in this world.  The magic is phenomenally detailed and the way it’s used can be interesting, funny, frightening, and sometimes even sexy.  So while I finished Wildfire well-satisfied, I definitely don’t want to leave Nevada and Rogan’s world.  And trust me, you won’t either.

THE GIRL WITH THE MAKE-BELIEVE HUSBAND by Julia QuinnThe Girl with the Make-Believe Husband by Julia Quinn
Series: Rokesby #2
Published by Avon Genres: Historical

When she receives word that her brother has been injured on the battlefield in the Colonies, newly orphaned Cecilia Harcourt does the only thing she can do: pack her bags, flee her oily cousin trying to coerce her into marriage, and spend her savings coming to America to take care of her brother.  But when she arrives in New York, it’s not her brother she finds in the hospital, but his best friend, Edward Rokesby.  Edward is injured and unconscious and Cecilia is determined to help him.  To do so, she has to tell one little lie: that she’s his wife.  She doesn’t expect Edward to awaken with no knowledge of the last three months of his life.  He knows who she is and believes it when he’s told they’re married.  With no leads on her brother and an injured, kind man who needs her, Cecilia decides to temporarily carry on her charade.  But the longer she’s around Edward, the harder it is not to slip into the fantasy that she’s his wife.  She knows she can’t lie to him forever, but what will happen when the truth comes out?

The Girl with the Make-Believe Husband is a bit of a difficult book for me to review.  Julia Quinn is one of my favorite authors and though this is a solidly-written book, it lacks Ms. Quinn’s signature vibrancy.  Part of this is due to the setting – Revolutionary War America, even away from the battlefront, doesn’t lend itself to witty banter or cheerful antics – but part of the problem is that nothing much happens in this story.  It’s the story of a good woman in a hard situation who is forced to lie, and the good man who is tricked as a result.

I won’t say The Girl with the Make-Believe Husband is a bad book, for it isn’t.  Cecilia and Edward are caring, likeable people who clearly make a good match.  But the most engaging part of their romance comes from the excerpts of letters they started to exchange through Cecilia’s brother months before our hero and heroine ever met.  Those tiny bits at the beginning of each chapter were, for me, the liveliest bits of the book.  The rest of the story was fairly slow and uneventful and this is the first time ever that I had no problem putting a book of Ms. Quinn’s down.  As I said before, it’s not a bad book; it’s a sweet, if slightly muted romance, and perhaps it would have worked better for me in a novella format.  Even though The Girl with the Make-Believe Husband wasn’t my particular cup of tea, the ending left me satisfied with Edward and Cecilia’s happily ever after and I’m incredibly anxious to read Andrew Rokesby’s book.

Jenna risks her very life in taking her chance to escape the religious cult that has owned her for the majority of her life.  It doesn’t matter to her that she is in rags and has no shoes, Jenna just knows that if she doesn’t escape now then her life really will be in worse danger and maybe even over.  Strong determination is the only thing forcing Jenna’s run to freedom.  It appears that the fates or God is with her when she not only escapes, but finds a way into the city.  However, Jenna knows that she has to find a way to get even farther away from the cult before she can risk relaxing or feeling in any way safe, but fate steps in once again and all but steals her chance to safely escape.

Isaac Washington is one of the long-time agents with Devereaux Security.  On the fateful day he meets Jenna, he discovers her trying to figure out how to steal his company SUV.  However, before he can capture the kid trying to take his vehicle, bullets begin to fly, and Isaac is hit hard.  Isaac can feel his body shutting down and dying when to his surprise, the woman (Jenna) touches him and heals not only his bleeding wounds, but also lightens his very soul.  Isaac has no idea who this woman is, but he knows that she just saved his life and gave up her only chance at escaping the people who are firing bullets.  Isaac convinces Jenna to take his SUV and run; It might seem odd, but Isaac knows that he can find his “angel” once back-up has arrived.

Jenna is in shock when Isaac tells her that he is going to protect her no matter what and stop the danger she is running from. Jenna can’t remember the last time anyone was nice or, heck, even thoughtful to her.  Isaac has instantly fallen for the beauty that Jenna has both on the inside and the outside, and now he faces the tough challenge of not only destroying the danger trying to take her, but also convincing Jenna that she can believe in his love.  Isaac is prepared to go lone wolf to make Jenna safe, but all of Deveraux Security is determined to help Isaac and put all of their resources behind making Jenna safe and protected.  As the truth about Jenna’s past slowly comes out, Isaac and the members of the team deal with their rage and disgust of how Jenna has been raised and abused. Once the team learns just who is behind this last ditch attempt to kidnap Jenna, Isaac and the entire team know just how deadly the danger really is.  Jenna has a hard time trusting anyone or anything after so many years of barely surviving. It seems that the fates aren’t quite done messing with Jenna or Isaac quite yet, but just when the chips are down, both of them learn just how much support and backing they really have.  When the dust settles, will Jenna and Isaac have the chance to explore their love, or will fate have dealt them a final and bitter blow that will separate them forever?

A man on a coffee run meets a desperate woman on the run just as danger explodes around them in Just One Touch.  I have often wondered when Isaac would get his story and just what type of extraordinary woman he would be matched up with.  By the end of their story, I felt that Jenna was the perfect match for Isaac.  However, I will say that as Jenna’s story and reactions unraveled, there were several times that I wasn’t sure if she would be a good match to Isaac.  I really enjoyed watching as not only Isaac, but the entire team, worked hard to show Jenna just how the world should function and that abuse was not the norm. I also enjoyed watching as Jenna began to accept that she was worthy of love and friendship.  The ending of the final battle is just icing on the cupcake of Jenna and Isaac’s journey—and one that I felt was very fitting.  I also enjoyed the brief glimpse of their future.  Just One Touch is full of the dynamic suspense that I have come to expect with the Slow Burn series, full of spine tingling danger, friends that have your back—no matter what and lots of soft passion.

In a world where magic is power, prestige and money all rolled into one, private investigator Nevada Baylor is an anomaly.  Her magic is rare and she has spent her life barely using her abilities as a truthseeker…until her last case thrust her into the world of magic and politics.  After the near destruction of Houston, life seems to have mostly gone back to normal.  Then Nevada’s latest case shoves her right back into danger.  The shadowy forces that nearly destroyed her city are back and more vicious than ever.  And Nevada isn’t the only one hunting them down.  Connor “Mad” Rogan, the billionaire Prime who gets her blood boiling like no one else, is working alongside her.  A few months apart has done nothing to calm the sparks that are flying between them.  With the stakes so high and numerous threats coming from unseen enemies, neither of them can afford to be distracted.  But sometimes attraction burns too hot to ignore…

White Hot is intense, energetic, and completely engrossing.  I’ve been impatiently waiting for this second Hidden Legacy novel and Ilona Andrews did not disappoint.

Nevada and Rogan are the heart of White Hot and you couldn’t ask for two more interesting, compelling characters (and that’s saying something since the entire cast of characters in this book is fascinating).  Nevada is a kickass heroine with a huge heart, a quick mind, and a spine of steel.  She’s already a well-developed character, but I loved watching her come further into her own when it comes to her magic.  Watching her explore her power was just plain neat, but the consequences of her doing so had me on the edge of my seat more than once over the course of the story.  How she deals with the curveballs thrown at her, and how Rogan helps her do so was fantastic.  And speaking of Rogan, he is one sinfully sexy Prime.  He’s as arrogant as ever, but his protective streak made me melt and I loved peeling back the layers to his character.  He and Nevada make an excellent match.  Their love story kicks into high gear in White Hot and I loved every bit of it.  The back-and-forth, the sexual tension, and the pure emotion that springs off the page was utterly fantastic and made me want to dive right back into this story as soon as I finished it.

White Hot is the second book in the Hidden Legacy trilogy, and you definitely want to read Burn for Me before diving into this story.  There’s not much I can say about the overarching series storyline because it would spoil things for readers.  Suffice it to say that if you thought things were intense in Burn for Me, then buckle up because you’re in for one hell of a ride.  The danger to Nevada, Rogan, and those they care about made it nearly impossible to put the book down.  In fact, pretty much everything about White Hot made the book difficult to put down.  It’s by turns thrilling, romantic, sexy, and unexpectedly funny.  My only complaint is that I now have to wait to delve into the final Hidden Legacy book, Wildfire.  I cannot wait to see what Ilona Andrews has in store for Nevada and Rogan!
