Shaw Matthews and Cassidy Whalen have gone against each other both professionally and privately.  However, when it appears that Cassidy has the next big thing in the bag, she does a runner and Shaw wins the sports star by default.  Not willing to garner his win as a sympathy bid, Shaw chases after Cassidy to her small home town and finds that to win the challenge fairly he needs to give more than he wanted to. Of course, Cassidy soon discovers that what she left behind years ago may just be willing to pick up where they left off when she spread her wings to discover a world beyond.

Getting Rough was a sizzling hot read that packed a wallop from the opening pages to the conclusion.  Shaw and Cassidy really got down to business upon their first meeting, and it moved quite quickly from there.  Perhaps that strong relationship foundation was established in the first book, Playing Dirty.  Once I got past the quickness of this quirky couple, I was all in for the ride that C. L. Parker promised.

Getting Rough had some fantastic secondary characters that really cinched the whole atmosphere of the small town setting that the tale embraced.  However, I did find that the potential third point in this triangle sprang in from left field upon occasion and really had a lot of nerve to do so in Getting Rough.  That was just a small sticking point with me, that still lingers a bit, but not enough to have been disappointed in this read.

Cara has worked hard to get to the top of her game.  She strives to be very responsible, but the occasional night out dancing helps to keep her on track with her goals.  Feeling that she would like to break from her rigid schedule, but fearing that veering off too far could send her world into a tailspin, Cara briefly dabbles into the deep end.  Discovering that her little excursion could cost her more than she bargained for, she aims to regain her rigid code and keep her nose to the grindstone.

Branden Duke has an agenda and the beautiful woman snoozing on his couch in his private sanctuary may have just thrown a wrench in his plans.  However, he intends to stay on target and get to the bottom of the deception plaguing his new take-over.  Perhaps Cara is a distraction, but will Branden allow her to cloud his judgment and risk more than he ever dreamed, or will she be exactly what he needs?

Filthy Rich was an engaging, adventurous read that drew me in from the first page.  I thoroughly enjoyed the fact that Branden looked beyond the surface and truly trusted his gut in some circumstances, yet proved he did have his faults in others in Filthy Rich.  Cara and her running hot and cold got a bit old at times, but I understood why she had such a conflict in Filthy Rich, after staying the course for so long to divert from it was a little unnerving for her.

The intrigue and mystery that played out in Filthy Rich was a surprise, as well.  I considered another character and was surprised when the culprit was revealed!  Filthy Rich showed that all work and no play for either Branden or Cara could make them very dull in the end, and frankly, I was glad they played…a lot…in Filthy Rich!

Ryan Kaminski has a knack for reading people.  When Harrison Montgomery walks into the bar she tends, she spots the vulnerability “Ken doll” tries to hide.  Never realizing exactly who she is tangling with between the sheets, Ryan soon discovers she is trapped and blackmailed to pose as something she is not.  Having no choice but to give in, Ryan goes along with the Montgomery scheme and soon finds herself falling in love with the real Harrison—the one she hadn’t seen since that one night.

Harrison Montgomery is adamant that he is not his father, and he means to steer clear from anything that even closely resembles what his father had tangled with during his political career.  However, when it comes out that Ryan Kaminski has wound up pregnant from their one night stand, Harrison must scramble to contain the fallout that could ruin his political ambitions!  Virtually blackmailing Ryan to save his name, Harrison soon finds that he may be willing to forego some things in order to attain something else, but can he convince Ryan?

Indecent Proposal is a fast-opening, spicy read that ratcheted up the tension quickly, and then explored a more solid foundation between the protagonists upon which to build a lasting relationship.  Harrison and Ryan got the bedroom action out of the way from the first few pages in Indecent Proposal, which left room for the depths of them to be more thoroughly explored without churning on the sexual chemistry.  Harrison’s public persona was a hard façade, but he hid a vulnerability that Ryan spotted right on and his mother named from their first meeting.  I also enjoyed that Ryan was pretty tough with Harrison’s cold matriarch, but knew when to rein it in, in Indecent Proposal.

Once I got past the quick moves on Harrison’s and Ryan’s behalf, I found Indecent Proposal to be an enjoyable read that explored the many facets of the characters involved in this tale.

Perfect for fans of J. R. Ward, Nalini Singh, and Lara Adrian, New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Virna DePaul’s thrilling series of paranormal romances invites readers into a seductive and dangerous world where vampires secretly exist among the general population, while the FBI tries to keep the Rogues among them from preying on humans—for killing, for turning, for pleasure.   Ex-soldier Barrett Miles had no idea that vampires were real—until Belladonna recruits her to serve as a covert agent and infiltrate a murderous sex ring run by the most depraved of immortals, those who feed on the purity and blood of innocents. Their latest victim: a young girl whom Barrett promised to protect. She will be sold—unless Barrett can find her first. Forced to team up with her former lover, Nick Maltese, an undercover sniper, Barrett is caught between fulfilling her personal mission and shielding her heart from the man who betrayed her.   Nick’s hunting a new breed of vampires and harboring a terrible secret when Barrett finds him. Soon a seething underworld of strange desires threatens to engulf them all. Can he save the girl and reclaim Barrett’s heart? Nick knows he has only one chance to prove himself to her as the hunt begins—and their love forces them to embrace the darkest places in their souls.

Barrett Miles is an ex-soldier who now works for the Belladonna Agency, a super-secret agency who is dealing with both rogue vampires and other vampires who believe that humans are just for food and profit.  Barrett started out on a mission to break down a ring of human kidnappers and stumbled across the worst type of human trafficking and to make it worse, this was very, very personal.  Barrett will do anything to save the young girl she just saw online on a vampire blood website.

Nick Maltese is also an ex-soldier who working as an undercover sniper and a former lover of Barrett’s.  When she shows up out of the blue and requests Nick’s help, he has a ton of questions and a ton of guilt concerning what happened at the end of their time together.  But he wasn’t about to tell Barrett no, after all he still loved her.

Barrett and Nick begin working as a team, even though Nick also had his own mission concerning rogue vampires.  When the various threads began to show that maybe, just maybe their missions might merge together in certain aspects, the danger becomes worse than it was to begin with.  Nick and Barrett have pinpointed a new blood club that is about to open as being a heck of a lot more than that and its owner has a lot to answer for.  The grand opening of the club is about to happen and Nick and Barrett plan on making it an opening no one will ever forget in the vampire world.  Help comes from very unexpected corners as does the danger – when the final battle is over just who is going to come away with a future and who is going down in flames?

Two stubborn ex-soldiers and lovers come back together to defeat a vampire threat to humanity in Awakened.  Nick and Barrett have a lot to get past before they will have a chance to see if this time their love will have a chance at a future.  There were several times I wondered if Barrett and Nick would come out together as the danger came closer and the pressure to succeed more intense.  I could feel the desperation that Barrett felt at not fulfilling a promise she made and I could also feel Nick’s determination to keep Barrett safe – even if the payment for that was to lose her.  However, both of these lovers had a bedrock of strength and trust that overcame even the truth on Nick’s actions to keep Barrett safe while they were both still in the service.  The suspense had me page flipping while I was cheering on Nick and Barrett as their passion surged forward.  Awakened is full of suspense, passion and enough danger to keep you glued to the pages until you learn just who comes out okay and who is behind the various threads and are paying for it.

From J. Kenner, the New York Times bestselling author of Release Me and Claim Me, writing as J. K. BeckEnter the thrilling, seductive world of the Shadow Keepers, which Lara Adrian calls “exciting paranormal romance with a sharp, suspenseful edge.” Carissa de Soranzo will not rest until her kidnapped younger brother has been freed from the nobleman Baloch de Fioro, a fiendish werewolf who means to turn the boy at the next full moon. Against her father’s wishes, Carissa secretly seeks help from the mysterious werewolf hunter Tiberius. Desperate, she promises to do anything if he’ll save her brother—and she can see in his eyes what that will mean.Dark, strong, and virile, Tiberius cannot resist ravishing the most beautiful woman he’s seen in centuries. But he can never truly have his fill of her, for Tiberius is a vampire. On a quest to trap the werewolf in his den, Tiberius realizes that the only way to rescue Carissa’s brother is to reveal what he truly is. But he risks losing Carissa forever—especially when she discovers that she has given her heart to a vampire.

Many centuries ago, Tiberius vowed to protect the the de Soranzo family because of the actions of a long gone forefather.  While on the hunt to destroy a werewolf Tiberius has come up against one too many times, he goes to the family home of the de Soranzo’s and discovers a couple of things.  The first is that the oldest member wants nothing to do with a vampire and the second is he is willing to destroy his family in order to have nothing to do with anything paranormal.

Carissa de Soranzo is the lady of the manor and has had an unusual upbringing in that she was taught to fight and handle a sword and most importantly she isn’t afraid to use everything at her disposal to go and save her brother’s life.  She is stunned when her father rejects the help of a stranger who offers to go and bring her brother back safely.  However, Carissa isn’t about to take no for an answer, especially when she is about to be sold off in marriage by her father.

Tiberius is captivated by the beautiful and resourceful Carissa from the beginning and when they find themselves as a team to get rid of that werewolf once and for all and bring back her brother, both are surprised at the passion which appears fast and hot.  Carissa now knows just who and what Tiberius is and once again she is willing to risk everything to have the man she loves and to protect the brother she loves.  When the battle is over, will Tiberius and Carissa have the future they are reaching for or is there one person still determined to stop them?

A young woman from a wealthy family and the vampire who vows to protect them find passion and hate is divided by a small line in Midnight.  I have watched how Tiberius and Carissa came back together after a misunderstanding and many years apart, but I always wondered just how they became a couple in the first place.  Now I know and to my mind their original meeting was exactly how I would have guessed based on how their lives together turned out, but you will need to read some of the previous books to discover this.  I loved just how spunky Carissa was, even when that was more than discouraged for women of her time, and how strong and stalwart Tiberius was even then.  If you have been following the Shadow Keepers series and read how Tiberius and Carissa broke up and got back together, then Midnight is a must read.  Midnight has the same suspense and action along with the red hot passion that I have come to expect with Ms. Beck’s writing.
