Chloe Muirhead thinks all that is left for her is spinsterhood. After she has fled from London two different times, she never wants to set foot back in town. So instead she has sought refuge with her mother’s godmother, a Duchess who takes her in as a companion. She never dreamt of meeting the Duchesses grandson and finding a kindred spirit.
Ralph Stockwood has wounds from the Napoleonic wars that are both visible and invisible. It is the invisible ones that have changed him more than people know. When he is called to his grandparents’ house to yet again receive the “you need an heir” speech he resigns himself to find a wife. What he doesn’t expect is that his grandmother’s companion will proposition a marriage of convenience. Convenience in that they will both get what they want. She wants a husband, children and a place to live far away from town. He wants someone who knows he can’t love and will give him an heir.
What neither is prepared for is how they fit so well together, both in thoughts and actions. When tragedy strikes and their situation changes it is nice to see how the author has shown them growing together. While I thought that Ralph was more than a “little” cruel at times it did not ruin the story for me. I loved seeing their love bloom and grow. While a promise is to be broken, it might be the way to drive these two closer. Only A Promise is a heartfelt historical that will make you smile.
