Bastien Smith is a financial genius for the DarkRiver pack.  Lately, Bastien has been going crazy, because he has scented his mate, but when he tries to follow it, it just goes away.  And then he found another scent that was different, but also seemed to point towards his mate and again, it just disappeared.  But he found the answer after helping an elder packmate back to her apartment from his mother’s house.

Kirby has just moved into the DarkRiver territory and was hired as a kindergarten teacher.  Kirby was raised by the State after being found outside a house fire that killed her parents and no relatives could be found for her.  Kirby has always known the bare basics of her past, but after moving to her new house and her new job, strange things have been happening to her.  Those strange occurrences just got worse after meeting Bastien.

Bastien knows that something is odd with Kirby, because her scent is split and when she suddenly starts having episodes of sudden pains, fevers and semi-shifting, he knows that Kirby’s past must have more in it than even she realizes.  Together, they work to learn just what Kirby’s past is, while Bastien works to show Kirby that no matter what they find, she will always be his mate—human, half-blood, or whatever the truth reveals.  As the facts come together, Kirby learns that she is a shifter, just not a leopard like Bastien.  With the love and support from Bastien and his pack, Kirby is able to learn what the tragic past hid from her and finds that she isn’t alone in the world after all.  Kirby is at another changing point.  Will she go to her lost past, or will she go forward with Bastien into the loving future that awaits them?

A leopard whose human part is on the hunt for his disappearing mate, and a shy schoolteacher with a hidden past will discover just what the future holds for them both in Secrets at Midnight.  I will say right away that this novella was in the anthology Nightshift, so if you have that you might not want this standalone or you might be like me and want this as a standalone for your psy-changeling library.  I loved watching as Bastien gently showed Kirby that their attraction was so much more and then helped her discover the truth about her very being.  I also have to admit to cheering for Kirby when she met Mercy the first time. It’s a part that I have read over a couple of times just because it’s so fun.  Mostly I found that watching as Kirby and Bastien found each other and traveled through their mating dance to be a page-turner.  There is nothing better than seeing a changeling find his forever mate and completing their mating dance.  I can only hope that the future is bright and shiny for both of them.  Secrets at Midnight is a perfect few hours of escape filled with love, passion, and discovery.

Echo of Silence

Tazia Nerif is an engineer on the deep sea station called Alaris. It’s an important job and one she work harded to get, and she loves it, but it also is a symbol of the loss of her entire family.  Even though it’s been years since Tazia has had any contact with her family, she still dreams that one day they will send her a message.  Stefan is the Psy in charge of the station.  Stefan is a teleporter and was earmarked to become an Arrow, but because of a deep flaw, Stefan was dropped from the squad.  Stefan has always kept his flaw under control—that is, until he accidentally hurts Tazia.  Now he is willing to expose his flaw to her and to also learn how to help her obtain the one thing she dreams of—reconnecting with her family.

Echos of Silence takes two people who have been deeply hurt by things that happened with their immediate families and gives them a way to heal and find a deep love that helps them heal even more.  I could all but hear Tazia’s heart break when Stefan says one fatal sentence.  I could also tell that the supposedly silent male was anything but and that he was hurt almost as much as Tazia was by his statement when he discovers the fallout from it.  I loved watching as Stefan and Tazia learned about each other and discovered how to heal with the others’ love and strength.  A perfect story to kick off this group of stories within a series I love.

Dorian

Dorian is a glimpse into the life of a well-loved character and allows us to see the life he led and how he handled it and also the joy in finally being able to shift.  I also loved watching as Dorian had to learn all the basics most shifters learn so young.  I will admit to cheering a couple of times as I read and watched Dorian become the man he is today.  A great second story for this book.

Partners in Persuasion

Felix is a SnowDancer wolf and head of the horticulture for them.  He is also a submissive and one who has been hurt before by trusting a dominant female in a relationship.  Felix would love to mate and have a family, but he is now extremely gun shy.  Dezi is a leopard DarkRiver dominant and senior soldier, one who is fascinated by Felix. Dezi is used to going for what she wants and wanting to know Felix better is no different.  However, at first it seems like one step forward leads to two steps back when they first try to have a relationship.  However, Felix decides to take matters into his own hands and, between he and Dezi, they figure out a few ground rules that help these two very different people discover a passion that can only lead to love and mating so long as they can learn to trust each other’s strengths and weaknesses.

Partners in Persuasion is yet another relationship where DarkRiver and SnowDancer become united by a couple of lovers.  I really loved reading along and watching as Felix and Dezi learned to take baby steps and didn’t allow his past or her dominance to stop them.  The best part was how fast their inner animals mixed and seeing how the humans learned how to love without any barriers.  I have loved Felix from when he first stepped into the picture to rebuild the forest that was destroyed during the Psy/SnowDancer battle.  I was very happy to see him find his perfect mate.  Yet another story that does not disappoint.

Flirtation of Fate

Garnet grew up just knowing that when she got older, her brother’s best friend, Kenji, would become her mate.  As Garnet grew, she and Kenji grew closer and closer and yet on her eighteenth birthday, he shattered her heart.  Garnet has been mad at him ever since.  Now many years later, both she and Kenji are SnowDancer Lieutenants in charge of important parts of their property.  Their dens are actually close together and therefore Kenji and Garnet have to work together quite often.  Kenji has loved Garnet since they were both children, but he had a very specific reason for his actions—reasons that he has kept to himself all these years.  Kenji is visiting Garnet’s den when a murder is discovered.  The weather is making so whoever did this has to still be in the den.  Garnet, with Kenji’s help, follows the clues to discover just what happened and the how and why of the murder.  Along the way, Garnet also sees clues that make her believe that there is more behind Kenji’s actions than just being a playboy that made him hurt her so badly years ago.  Determined, Garnet sets her sights on learning two truths:  who murdered a member of her den and just what secrets Kenji is hiding from her.  When the answers come out, one will make Garnet very sad, and one will make her dreams come true.

Flirtation of Fate finally brings Garnet and Kenji together after years of heartache.  It also proves just how strong they are as partners, both for SnowDancer and as lovers.  I loved watching them come together and to see the dual heartaches that happened so long ago become healed.

Wild Embrace is four strong and gripping stories in a world I have come to love.  I have to say I didn’t feel there was a weak one in the bunch and all of them submerged me into their individual worlds and had me following the paths of each one intently.  I also loved that each story could actually be read as a stand alone or with the knowledge of knowing the world and series in which they are all set.  By time I was done, there was no doubt in my mind that this would be a Joyfully Recommended book.  I highly recommend it even if you haven’t read any of the books in the series.  Just be warned that you will probably become addicted to the world and will end up starting from Book One and going forward.

The Psy/Changeling world has recently had many, many changes. First, a war that almost tore the entire world apart and then shock after a madness brought chaos, and then finally a tentative peace with the Trinity Accord.  While many of the strongest Psy, Changeling, and Humans are doing everything they can to achieve the peace the world needs so desperately, there are many strong people of all the races who are determined to destroy the agreement before its roots can grow strong and sink in deep.  As the days and weeks go by, it becomes apparent to those backing the Accord that more changes will need to be made to the backbone of the Accord itself so that it can grow and include more than the first signers.

That would have been enough to keep the Humans, Changelings and Psy busy, but life must go on and as the DarkRiver and the SnowDancers get ready to welcome the pupcubs and the Arrows of all ages are learning to feel and love, a cry for help is located from one of the missing BlackSea Changelings, and it appears that the Coalition believes that Lucas and Sasha’s daughter is the perfect way to destroy the tentative peace.  It’s all hands on deck to not only find the missing BlackSea member and keep all of the children safe, because it’s not just Naya that is in danger, but all of the children from every group who signed the Accord.  There are many changes both happy and sad that happen as the various groups learn to talk with each other and share in order to protect and grow.  The world is never going to be perfect, but maybe so long as communication and cooperation continues to happen, the world just might find the peace it’s seeking.

Buckle up because this is going to be a bumpy and emotional ride but so, so worth it.  Allegiance of Honor ties-up many threads from the first arc in Ms. Singh’s wonderful world.  We get to catch up on all of our favorite couples and characters, learn more about some recently introduced characters, and see the trundles of what is in store for this world when the new story arc unfolds.  As with life, not all of the experiences are joyful ones, but even in sorrow, you can also find joy, and I experienced this in a couple of places.  Of course, there is the great suspense we have come to expect in a Psy/Changeling book.  And I was so very impatient to see the birth of the pupcubs—another wonderful moment you will love to experience.

As I closed the book, I knew that the world and my favorite characters would continue to live their lives, and I might see glimpses of what they are doing much later down the road, but I have to admit that it was a bittersweet feeling.  I actually read the book twice before I even tried to write this review and then had to re-do this several times—all because I wanted to tell you about so many points that just grabbed me.  In the end, I just have to Joyfully Recommend Allegiance of Honor as a true must-read and an absolute keeper.  Heck, if we had a higher category to rate a book, I would have given it to this one.  I can’t wait for this book to come out so I can discuss it in detail with other rabid readers.

Ms. Singh has produced a major hit to end a favorite story arc and deserves to take a bow, but a quick one so that she can give us the next adventure in this growing world…hint, hint.

**Slave to Sensation the first book in Nalini Singh's infamous Psy-Changeling series is being reissued! Joyfully Reviewed is celebrating by doing a reissue of our own. Below you can read why former Joyfully Reviewed Reviewer Maura fell in love with Singh's beloved series. Reviewed by Maura Anderson
Sascha Duncan has always known she was different from the other Psy.  A race of “superior” humans that are conditioned from birth to feel nothing, the Psy have become the leaders and renowned for their icy disdain and lack of emotions.  But Sascha is forced to guard her every word and thought to prevent others on the PsyNet from discovering she is flawed.  If it was discovered that she could feel emotions, it would result in her being sent to “rehabilitation” and the total psychic erasure of everything she is.

Sascha has been assigned the task of working with the Changeling, Lucas Hunter, on a joint business project between the Psy and the Changelings.  The Changelings are the opposite of the Psy and revel in their sensual nature and their enjoyment of life, emotions and physical desires.

But Lucas isn’t just any Changeling, he’s the Alpha ruler of the DarkRiver Leopard pack and he’s determined to find out the truth behind the brutal murders of several Changeling women by a Psy.  He sees this business partnership as a way to look into the secretive Psy society through their representative, Sascha.

But Sascha and Lucas both find the other is not what they expected and they are fascinated by each other.  Will the secrets they discover mean their destruction and perhaps the destruction of their very societies?

I had already read some of Nalini’’s contemporary romances by the time I saw the announcement of this paranormal romance and I’ll admit I was a little uncertain.  You just never know what to expect when an author does a genre shift, but the premise and blurb was so interesting that I gave it a try and I am extremely glad that I did.

Slave to Sensation is a fascinating look at an alternative reality where society has taken their separation to extremes.  I started to read this book late one evening and couldn’t put it down until I had devoured it–then I read it all again the next day.  With hot sex and an all-consuming love, the characters totally enthralled me and especially Sascha’s struggles to be what she was expected to be, then her desire to protect Lucas and the DarkRiver Leopards in the face of everything she’s been raised to believe and her certainty that it will mean her own destruction.

I completely and Joyfully Recommend Slave to Sensation. With an incredibly rich world and societies, hot sex and enthralling emotions, I will undoubtedly read this book again and again.  Now I can’t wait for the next book in this series!

The Arrows live in the shadows, more myth than reality to many of the Psy race.  They are justice, and they are seemingly invincible.  And after the fall of Silence, they are in danger.  When Aden Kai, leader of the Arrows, wakes up in a cell, cut off from the PsyNet and without his abilities, he knows he’s in trouble.  In the cell with him is the last person he would expect: Zaira Neve, the most lethal Arrow in his squad and the only woman who ever managed to break through his Silence and capture his heart.  Neither Aden nor Zaira have any idea who would take them or why, but when they break out of their prison it’s only the beginning of the mystery.  Someone is targeting the Arrow squad and Aden specifically, and the further Aden and Zaira dig the more they begin to see that a deadly conspiracy has been put into place, one that threatens not only the Psy, but humans and changelings as well.

Aden will do anything to protect his people, to foster a new age where Arrows are free to live and love.  But to do so he needs Zaira’s help.  And Zaira knows she can never open up enough to be the person Aden needs.  For her, Silence was a blessing, containing the danger inside her.  If she tears down her walls for Aden, the rage will slip out, destroying everything they hope to build.

Shards of Hope is a brilliantly crafted, powerful romance you don’t want to miss!  Nalini Singh’s fourteenth full-length Psy-Changeling book is by turns exhilarating, heartbreaking, hopeful, and romantic

Aden and Zaira are impossible to resist and their romance is one that will make you melt.  It’s clear from the start that Aden and Zaira love one another, but sometimes love just isn’t enough.  Zaira’s powers are lethal and because of the way she was tortured as a child, she feels like she’s permanently broken inside.  She fears that by letting Aden in, the dark and twisted part of her will overwhelm everything, making her a very real danger to others.  Zaira isn’t exaggerating her power or the rage inside of her; she is lethal and the abuse she suffered as a child left an enormous scar.  But she’s also far stronger than she knows and her capacity for love, compassion, and caring is unrivaled as well.  She’s the perfect match for Aden, a man who was never truly Silent, a man who will sacrifice himself a thousand times over to protect his squad.  Aden and Zaira see each other for who they are and love the whole of each other.  It isn’t easy for them to get that elusive happily ever after, but it’s worth every rough spot on the journey.  Aden’s faith and love in Zaira and her trust and love in him are simply beautiful.

The Arrows have long been prominent players in the Psy-Changeling series, but Shards of Hope brings the focus on the group as a whole like nothing before.  The Arrows are some of the deadliest members of the Psy race, and that level of inherent power comes with a price.  Silence helped many of the Arrows control their lethal abilities, and post-Silence they must now learn to adapt, to become the men and women they need to be not only to protect their race, but to nurture and guide the youngest generation.  I absolutely loved watching Aden learn from the changelings and adapt the concept of Pack into something that works for the Arrows.  Ms. Singh shows the inner workings and loyalties of the squad in a way she hasn’t done before and it’s truly marvelous to uncover the secrets of this mysterious group.

Shards of Hope begins a new storyline, one involving a dangerous new group that’s targeting all three races.  Though this is bad news for the characters we’ve come to love, it’s great news for readers.  This compelling storyline brings together almost every single major character from the Psy-Changeling series.  The fact that Ms. Singh can seamlessly blend together so many points of view is truly a marvel.  The new plotline (which I won’t spoil) spans the globe and all three races, creating intriguing new opportunities for future books.  Because of the breadth of this storyline, Shards of Hope likely shouldn’t be read as a standalone.  But fans of the series are going to love it, not just for Aden and Zaira but for all the characters who’ve already found their way into our hearts.  And though I won’t spoil it, I will say that readers should prepare to see a major character-building payoff from a supporting character who has been with the series from the beginning.

Shards of Hope is smart, complex, and touching.  Aden and Zaira’s romance is powerful and the world of the Psy-Changeling series continues to develop in new and interesting ways.  There’s so much to love about Aden and Zaira’s book and I’ve barely touched on what readers will uncover.  Psy-Changeling fans, don’t miss Shards of Hope.  I Joyfully – unreservedly – Recommend it!
