MAJOR LOVE by Kate StewartMajor Love by Kate Stewart
Series: Balls in Play #2
Published by Self Published Genres: Contemporary

After reading Anything but Minor by Kate Stewart I couldn’t wait to read Major Love which happens to be book two in the Balls in Play series. While Anything but Minor was on the laugh out loud funny side, Major Love was more of an emotional story but don’t get me wrong it did have its funny parts, it was just a little deeper than I thought it would be.

If you read the previous book in this series you remember Andy not only as Rafe’s friend but that he had just retired from the minor league and runs a successful bar. The woman he was in love with left and Andy is heartbroken and not handling it so well. When he attends the engagement party for Rafe and Alice he puts on a brave face and drinks a lot just to make it through the night but what he didn’t expect was to be attracted to the maid of honor, April. Andy isn’t in the right mind to start something new but he knows he will be seeing April again and he just hopes to keep his heart in check this time.

April is a 911 dispatcher for Charleston, and about 9 months ago one of her best friends and brother in law, Kurt, was killed in the line of duty on what was supposed to be a simple traffic stop. After that April didn’t feel whole so she broke things off with her longtime boyfriend Tyler to move in with her sister and help take care of her nieces and nephews. At the engagement party she meets Andy who is gorgeous and she enjoys flirting with him but after a few drinks Andy starts to open up and April begins to fall for him a little. The only problem is when they see one another again Andy doesn’t remember that night at all. Can April help heal his broken heart or will baseball be the only thing he can love?

At the beginning of Major Love I have to admit I had a hard time getting into this couple and because of that it took more time to get into the story. Major Love is a little on the slower side than Anything but Love but when it picked up I truly started to fall for Andy. Not only was he good looking and talented but he was after the ever after kind of love which I found sweet. April was a decent heroine but I didn’t take to her like I did with Alice, I found her outspoken, selfless and a little unsure where things were actually headed with Andy.

From the very beginning April and Andy had great attraction to one another but their relationship is done in spurts. I felt they spent more time apart then together and they went days or even weeks without interacting which had me frustrated since I wanted them to get together. Their love scenes were hot and I felt Ms. Stewart took her time getting them to that level.

As I said earlier, there was some humor but both characters were still going through their own emotional woes and because of that their relationship just felt as if it was at a standstill for the majority of Major Love. Saying that though, I am glad I did end up reading Major Love and I really hope Ms. Stewart will be adding more books in the Balls in Play series.

GOING DOWN EASY by Carly PhillipsGoing Down by Carly Phillips
Series: Billionaire Bad Boys #1
Published by Self Published Genres: Contemporary

When Lexie Parker is offered the job at Blink as Kaden Barnes assistant she jumps at the chance to take it. After all, she is starting her life over again because she is always stepping in to take care of her twin sister Kendall. She never expected to be attracted to Kaden but she understands his little quirks which only peaks her curiosity of him. Kaden has gone through assistants like water so he really doesn’t expect Lexie to stick around but when she continues to show up day after day he notices there is something special about her.

I really enjoyed Going Down Easy and the characters very much. Kaden was smart, sexy and his little quirks brought him to life. Lexie was a strong heroine with helping out her family and putting her life on hold. She was gutsy and I took to her right away. When Lexie started to finally put herself first I couldn’t have been happier for her because after everything she has gone through to help her sister she finally deserved to be first for once.

Kaden and Lexie had great tension and chemistry throughout Going Down Easy which kept me invested to the very end. At first I was wondering when they would finally get together but I thought Carly. Phillips set a believable pace especially because it was a boss and assistant story. While Kaden was a little tough to deal with at times I liked how Lexie never gave up. They really made a great team.

Ms. Phillips details were so vivid in Going Down Easy I felt as if I were watching a movie. The story flowed nicely and had the right amount of steamy scenes that didn’t override the romance that was building between Kaden and Lexie.

Billionaire books have been done a hundred times but Ms. Phillips makes the Billionaire Bad Boys series take a different spin with them making an app which I found delightful. Going Down Easy was a remarkable read that brought up every day problems including mental illness. I am really looking forward to meeting his partners and getting to know them much better.

ANATOMY OF A PLAYER by Cindi MadsenAnatomy of a Player by Cindi Madsen
Series: Taking Shots #2
Published by Entangled Publishing, LLC Genres: New Adult, Sports

Whitney Porter is officially done with men after her recent heartbreak and is now focusing on her journalism career. She only wants to be taken seriously so when she gets a job as the new sports reporter for her college newspaper to cover the hockey games she is going to go undercover to find out if the team is getting special treatment because they won last year. Whitney first meets Hudson at a party and knows right away he is a player but since she has sworn off men and sex his charms are lost on her until she comes face to face with him in the locker room on the first day of her job. The problem is that there is more to Hudson then what Whitney originally thought and she might just end up heartbroken again but this one will hurt the worst of all.

Hudson Decker is struggling in some classes but in order to keep his scholarship and remain on the hockey team he needs to start studying more. But after a call from his mother he is desperate for a distraction and Whitney is the perfect one. Hudson has never had a problem getting a girl interested in him and he finds Whitney deflecting his advances a challenge, and after all, he never backs down from a challenge. When Hudson’s friends bet him that he can’t get the uptight reporter into bed he’s out to prove them wrong but when Hudson starts developing feelings for Whitney he needs to tell her about the bet and hope he doesn’t lose her forever.

Since this is my first book in the Taking Shots series by Cindi Madsen I wasn’t sure what to expect but I really found myself enjoying Anatomy of a Player. Hudson does come off as a player but at least he is honest and upfront with the girls he beds beforehand. I enjoyed watching him fall for Whitney, even though he didn’t realize it was happening, it was honestly one of the things I really liked most in Anatomy of a Player. When Hudson and Whitney started to really get to know one another they found they had some things in common such as their family life even though they weren’t the same they could relate to one another on that level. Whitney was easy to like and I found her very relatable since I have been in her shoes a time or two.

While I did enjoy Anatomy of a Player I did find the pace on the slow moving side, but once Hudson and Whitney started to build a friendship of sorts it started to pick up a bit. The main characters held my attention and I was really glad this story was done in dual povs. There were a few times I was a little frustrated with their ways of thinking or how they reacted but I had to remind myself that this is a new adult and sometimes that’s just the way it goes.

Anatomy of a Player was a cute and fun read that has me wanting to start book one right away and I believe that has to do with that this is a hockey romance and for some reason I am drawn to them even though I have maybe seen one hockey game in my entire life. The Taking Shots series is being added to TBR list and I think Ms. Madsen is an author to watch out for.

A STROKE OF MIDNIGHT by Andie J. ChristopherStroke of Midnight by Andie J. Christopher
Series: One Night in South Beach #1
Published by Kensington Publishing Corp. Genres: Contemporary

New Year’s Eve in Miami. One night. No names. No going back. Workaholic, Alana Hernandez and former Navy Seal, Cole Roberts have a one night stand. Cole is seeking to soothe his injured heart, Anna is looking for a quick hook up, but ohhhh how life throws a huge wrench in their “perfect” plan when morning comes!

Stroke of Midnight is Ms. Christopher’s debut, and not only has she captured the flavor and spirit of Miami but she has written, in my opinion, a Hero and Heroine who experience a true and realistic romance. I thoroughly enjoyed “watching” Alana & Cole’s relationship unfold. The pacing and story flowed very well. Cole is a dirty talking hero who not only loves Alana very much, but is just as determined to show her that what may have started out as a one night stand, quickly became so much more for him. I felt like Alana and Cole could be a part of my inner circle, that’s just how authentic the romance feels.

Stroke of Midnight is a well written, sexy, hot romance that will have you not only laughing out loud but wishing for your very own Cole. I am eagerly anticipating Alana’s brother, Javi and her sister, Carla’s HEA’s. Kudos on your debut, Ms. Christopher and keep ’em coming! Stroke of Midnight is a perfect combo of romance with a dirty talking hero, a take charge heroine, hot sex & funny story, which I thoroughly enjoyed!

SHADOW RIDER by Christine FeehanShadow Rider by Christine Feehan
Series: Shadow #1
Published by Jove Genres: Paranormal

Christine Feehan is a semi new author to me but when I saw this book and read the blurb I really liked how it sounded and of course had to devour it in one sitting. Shadow Rider is the first book in the Shadow series and once I started getting into this new world that Feehan created I was totally hooked. I want to say this story is a contemporary with a paranormal twist. There were no fairies, vampires or even werewolves for that matter, but it was about a family that can mask themselves in shadows which was very unique and intriguing.

Stefano is the head of the powerful Ferraro family. He might be the oldest of his siblings but he is one of the most bad ass heroes I have read about in a long time. The shadow walker legacy goes back centuries and they have a hard time finding their other halves so their marriages are usually arranged so the legacy will live on. It just so happens Stefano is about to leave town for a job when he comes across Francesca by mistake and it turns out to be the best thing that has ever happened to him because she is a rider.

Francesca has no idea that her life is about to change when Stefano steps in and gives her his coat and some money. She also has no idea that she is a rider. It’s up to Stefano to convince Francesca to accept all of him at her own free will, but it’s going to take some time. Sometimes she finds his bossiness and hard tone a bit scary even if she also thinks he is his most attractive at those moments.

Usually during reading a story I always favor one character more than the others but during Shadow Rider I honestly had no favorites because I really liked each and every character. The way Feehan wrote each member of the Ferraro family just worked. They were close and I just really took to how different their personalities were. Stefano was bossy, sexy and had this deadly air around him but he also came off as sweet and charming. Francesca did a great job at holding her ground and gave him sass when he pushed her to do something but I could see her starting to trust him and his word little by little.

Everyone loves a good love scene, but oh man did Feehan bring it with each and every one. They are detailed and last over numerous pages without being too wordy. Now don’t get me wrong during the story there was some repeating when it wasn’t needed but I felt it didn’t take away from the story. Shadow Rider is filled with plenty of action on top of the romance that is blooming and really had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. The ending sets up for the next book and already I am stalking Feehan’s website to find out when it will be released and who it will be about. If you haven’t picked up Shadow Rider I would do so today and get to know Stefano and Francesca.
